December 28, 2011: Goldston Sewer Project

What a big day for the citizens of Goldston! I attended Congressman Etheridge’s announcement ceremony for funding this much needed sewerage project for Goldston.

$6,374,000 TOTAL….$2,947,000 in a USDA Rural Development loan at 3% financed over 40 years, $2,400,500 as a Rural Development grant, $1,000,000 as a NC Rural Center grant and $26,500 from the town.

Goldston has long suffered from failing septic systems with land that simply won’t perk.

We, Chatham County, have not issued a septic permit in Goldston for 5 years and it doesn’t take a soils scientist to know this is causing or will cause health issues. This project will serve approximately 160 – 180 homes and allow for some commercial development in the Goldston area.

This funding is the result of years of work by many….Goldston Mayor Tim Cunnup and his Town Board, Congressman Bob Etheridge, House Speaker Joe Hackney, Senator Bob Atwater, the USDA Rural Development staff, the NC Rural Center staff, the current and past BOCs, Chatham Manager Charlie Horne and many others.

The City of Sanford will act as our regional sewerage partner. They will treat the Goldston sewage and discharge the cleaned effluent into the Deep River near Comnock.

I know it will be well cleaned, because Sanford’s water intake is downstream on the Cape Fear at NC-42!
